Oceanic-acoustic experiments at SACLANTCEN
Abstract
Last year, at the Director's suggestion, a project in oceanicacoustics was set up at the Centre with scientists from at least 3 groups playing some part in the planning and execution of experiments. The p roject represents a serious effort to break down the older concepts of ASW oceanographers and acousticians following broadly the same research lines but working independently of one another and planning s eparate cruises. With oceanographers and acousticians working together at sea the acoustic trials benefit from h aving much more detailed environmental data than usually available in trials while any prediction of sonar conditions that the oceanog r apher is likely to make from the environmental data can be checked by the acoustician.
